CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns had a 13-point lead with fewer than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, but gave it up against Joe Flacco and the Jets in a shocking 31-30 loss on Sunday.
The Browns gave up two passing touchdowns to Flacco in the final 1:22 and failed to recover an onside kick that gave the Jets the ball for the winning drive. Flacco threw four TD passes for the Jets.
Nick Chubb hit for three touchdowns, but the defense had too many problems for Chubb and the Browns’ offense to overcome.
The game was a roller coaster, as you can see on social media, particularly in the final two minutes.
Here is how social media reacted throughout the game.
“love that play action call from Stefanski on 2nd and short. get Brissett into a rhythm early,” tweeted Jordan Zirm of the Sporting News.
“What a clinic from Stefanski. That’s the blueprint,” Cleveland Browns Daily host Beau Bishop tweeted after Nick Chubb’s four-yard touchdown run capped off a 14-play, 90-yard drive to give the Browns a 7-0 lead.
“Gutsy call by Saleh,” Jeff Lloyd of Locked on Browns tweeted after the Jets converted a fake punt for a first down.
“Buckeye. Garrett Wilson scores and it’s 7-7,” WOIO-TV’s Mark Schwab tweeted.
“GARRETT WILSON!!! @GarrettWilson_V” Ohio State wide receiver coach Brian Hartline tweeted.
“Jets daring the Browns to beat their man coverage on 3rd down. Cooper gets WIDE open, Brissett makes it count,” Pete Smith of Browns Digest tweeted.
Zirm after Donovan Peoples-Jones made a difficult catch in the end zone against Sauce Gardner that was overturned on replay: “that should be a TD just based on the level of difficulty alone. my goodness, DPJ”
Smith: “Jadeveon Clowney just made a number of defensive mistakes disappear in an instant with the strip sack recovery.”
“Elijah Moore and Garrett Wilson are doing filthy work,” Cory Kinnan of The Browns Wire tweeted.
“#browns Busted coverage after busted coverage after busted coverage. Something has to give because this is beyond unacceptable,” Cody Suek of the Orange and Brown Report tweeted after the Jets tied the game at 14 on a pass from Joe Flacco to a wide open Breece Hall.
“The coverage bust has to stop, this is one of the most simplistic defenses I’ve ever been apart of. If they have to say what they got before every snap then so be it, but it’s getting ridiculous #browns” former Ohio State safety Tyvis Powell tweeted.
zirm: “who is this Jacoby Brissett and what did they do with his old body”
“Amari Cooper is such a breath of fresh air for the Browns in terms of creating separation,” Smith tweeted.
“Jets are 7/10 on 3rd down,” NFL Network’s Andrew Siciliano tweeted.
“I’m not quite sure why the Browns are playing cushion coverage in a 3-point game,” Fox college basketball announcer John Fanta tweeted.
“What’s with all the soft zone???” ESPN Cleveland’s Emmett Golden tweeted.
Smith: “Joe Flacco has been around forever. None of the stuff the Browns are doing is fooling him whatsoever”
fanta: “In the past, I’ve rolled my eyes at the amount of Joe Woods criticism. But the amount of confusion and open receivers has me fully believing it’s justifiable today. Looks like Browns took Jets lightly.”
“Beautifully executed screen to Nick Chubb. Three key blocks opened that up,” Smith tweeted.
“Put Nick Chubb in the MVP race. He’s absolutely absurd man,” fanta tweeted after Chubb’s seven-yard touchdown run gave the Browns a 24-17 lead.
Bishop: “Never ever take Nick Chubb for granted, perfect Brown.”
“Kareem Hunt special,” YouTuber Quincy Carrier tweeted.
kinnan: “You cannot ask for anything more out of Jacoby Brissett. Just a great performance from him.”
Fanta after Brissett was sacked on a pivotal third down late in the quarter: “Jacoby Brissett was great all afternoon, but my word, you can’t take a sack there.”
Smith: “Browns defense tightened up on that last drive.”
“Brissett has been really composed,” Anthony Lima of 92.3 The Fan tweeted after Brissett connected with Kareem Hunt on a third-down screen pass to move the chains with 2:15 to play.
“Nick Chubb might be Jim Brown,” former Browns receiver Andrew Hawkins tweeted after Chubb’s third touchdown run of the game.
lime: “This commitment to the two stud backs gets the Browns to the playoffs last year. But then they would still have Baker. They’re probably thrilled with their decision”
“Browns are gonna get to 2-0. Next up: the Steelers and Falcons. So 4-0′s not out of the question,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer tweeted.
“Holy Batman. Jets got that. Omg,” Dustin Fox of 92.3 The Fan tweeted after the Jets recovered an onside kick down by six.
“At the,” Carman tweeted.
“Some serious questions need to be answered on defense and special teams. week after week,” Suek tweeted.
Smith: “Defense is a smoldering wreck. Joe Flacco didn’t miss.”
fanta: “I have seen some bad moments. This…this is an all-time low.”
Breer: “I’m sorry, Cleveland.”
“Browns fans can’t believe what they’re seeing” CBS Sports tweeted.
Powell: “They made Joe Flacco look like #5 for the ravens!”
“Monumental collapse . Epic 1:55 left and @jets had no timeouts. Browns led by 13 as @YorkCade missed PAT. Jets scored on defensive breakdown. Browns did not recover on side kick. Jets score on Wilson td catch and NY wins by 1. Incredible #browns” former Fox 8 sportscaster John Telich tweeted.
“That’s a brutal loss for Cleveland. Had multiple opportunities to close out the game,” ESPN’s Matt Bowen tweeted.
“Cade York went from being the hero last week to missing an extra point with 1:55 left. That kick was the difference. #browns lose by one point! Not all his fault though. Secondary played horrible. Unbelievable. Only in Cleveland. @fox8news” Fox 8’s John Sabol tweeted.
