Apple Files 6 Trademark Applications around the Globe for ‘Apple M2’, the Creative Lock design found in their Privacy ad Campaigns & more

This was a busy week for new Apple trademark filings around the globe. Apple filed for the non-figurative version of ‘Apple M2’ along with the creative lock design found in their marketing of ‘Apple Privacy.’ Apple also filed for iOS related ‘Live Activities’ and iPhone 14 camera related ‘Photonic Engine.’

Apple M2

The US Patent Office has published Apple’s non-figurative trademark filing for ‘Apple M2’ filed earlier this week which only represents an alpha-numeric version of the trademark which is different from the figurative version displayed in our cover graphic above.

Apple’s trademark was filed under International Class 009 covering “computers; computer hardware, namely, integrated circuits; and computer chips.” Apple’s original filing for this trademark was secretly made in Jamaica in May 2022 under application number 86521. This was one month prior to Apple introducing their new MacBooks powered by their next-gen ‘M2″ processor.

Apple Specimen

The US Patent Office defines a specimen as being an example of how a company is actually using their trademark in the marketplace with the goods or services in their application. It’s what consumers see when they are considering whether to purchase goods or subscribe to services that Apple provides in connection with their trademark. Below is Apple’s ‘Specimen’ for the trademark ‘Apple M2.’

Apple filed their figurative trademark under International Classes 009 and 042. Apple’s 009 is shown to cover every conceivable hardware product current, future, and in the next century – which is too long to list.

Examples of hardware under 009 include: Computers; computer hardware; wearable computer hardware; handheld computers; tablet computers; telecommunications apparatus and instruments; telephones; mobile phones; smart phones; wireless communication devices, 3D spectacles, smart glasses, sunglasses monitors, motor vehicle audio apparatus; bags, cases, residential surveillance systems and more.

International Class 042 covers: “Design and development of computer hardware, software, peripherals, and computer and video games; computer hardware and software consulting services; computer programming; design of computer databases; electronic data storage; cloud computing services; rental of computer hardware, software, and peripherals; providing online non-downloadable software; consultation services for developing computer systems, databases and applications; computer security and data security consultancy; data encryption services; providing computer hardware or software information online; maintenance, repair and updating of computer hardware, software , peripherals, and applications; technical support services, diagnosing and troubleshooting of computer hardware and software problems, and computer help desk services; website creation, design, and maintenance services; website hosting services; providing search engines for obtaining data via the internet and other electronic communications networks; cre reaching indexes of online information, websites and other resources available on the Internet and other electronic communications networks; cartography and mapping services; providing an Internet portal allowing users to preview and download electronic books, publications, and other documents; scientific and technological services; industrial design services; industrial analysis and research services; medical research; medical laboratories; information, advisory and consultancy services relating to all the aforesaid.”

It should be noted that international trademark classes that Apple files their trademarks under are important as the trademark registration will only protect those classes that have been identified in their original application. In a legal battle, the classes filed for originally could make or break a legal case.
